Every airline provides different guidelines for carry-on luggage. Here
are general carry-on baggage rules and maximum size restrictions from each
major and low-cost airline. The rules and standards are applicable to domestic
coach flights and may change without notice.
Air Canada
Two checked pieces — one carry-on bag (21.65" x 15.75"
x 9") and one personal item (purse, laptop, briefcase)
American Airlines
Two checked pieces — one carry-on bag (not to exceed 45 linear inches
which is the length + width + height) or weigh more than 40 pounds, and
one personal item (purse, laptop, briefcase)
Continental Airlines
Two checked pieces — one carry-on bag (not to exceed 51 linear inches
which is the length + width + height) or weigh more than 40 pounds, and
one personal item (purse, laptop, briefcase)
Delta Airlines
Two checked pieces — one carry-on bag (not to exceed 22" x
17" x 10") or weigh more than 40 pounds, and one personal item
(purse, laptop, briefcase)
Northwest Airlines
Two checked pieces — one carry-on bag (not to exceed 21" x
14" x 9") or weigh more than 40 pounds, and one personal item
(purse, laptop, briecase)
Southwest Airlines
Three checked pieces — one carry-on bag (not to exceed 24"
x 16" x 10") and one personal item (purse, laptop, briecase)
United Airlines
Two checked pieces — one carry-on bag (not to exceed 22" x
14" x 9" or 45 linear inches) and one personal item (purse,
laptop, briefcase)
US Airways
Two checked pieces — one carry-on bag (not to exceed 45" x
23" x 4" to fit in a closet, 24" x 16" x 10"
to fit in an overhead cabin, 21" x 16" x 8" to fit under
seat) and one personal item (purse, laptop, briefcase)
